Upside-down spiders build upside-down orb webs: web asymmetry, spider orientation and running speed in Cyclosa.
Almost all spiders building vertical orb webs face downwards when sitting on the hubs of their webs, and their webs exhibit an up-down size asymmetry, with the lower part of the capture area being larger than the upper. However, spiders of the genus Cyclosa, which all build vertical orb webs, exhibit inter- and intraspecific variation in orientation. In particular, Cyclosa ginnaga and C. argent...

We prove that there is a correspondence between Ramanujan-type formulas for 1/π and formulas for Dirichlet L-values. Our method also allows us to reduce certain values of the Epstein zeta function to rapidly converging hypergeometric functions. The Epstein zeta functions were previously studied by Glasser and Zucker.

Over the recent years, several proposals were made to enhance database systems with automated reasoning. In this article we analyze two such enhancements based on meta-interpretation. We consider on the one hand the theorem prover Satchmo, on the other hand the Alexander and Magic Set methods. Although they achieve different goals and are based on distinct reasoning paradigms, Satchmo and the A...

Within African savannas, elephants often damage individual trees to the extent that they influence tree density. New research shows that mutualistic ants inhabiting certain species of Acacia protect trees from catastrophic herbivory by elephants. Protection by the ants stabilizes tree cover across savannas in what is otherwise a highly dynamic biome.

MicroRNAs are 19-22 nt-long RNAs that regulate eukaryotic gene expression. They are processed from stem-loop containing precursor transcripts by RNAse III enzymes of the Dicer family. In this issue of the EMBO Journal, a study by Bologna and colleagues investigates the processing of two plant MIRNA families with unusually long precursors. Their findings suggest a non-canonical mode of biogenesi...
